I used to get so excited over the idea of updates to my favorite iPhone applications, but now it just pisses me off. Not because I don’t want the cool new features, bug fixes and functionality changes - but because of the way Apple (specifically iTunes) handles App Updates.

Problems? Why yes there are:
-
iTunes doesn’t check for updates enough. I find myself clicking this stupid little link on the bottom of the apps page to find out which ones need updating. Also, the iTunes version of the app store checks more frequently, and it causes you to update your phone, disconnect and see a whole slew of updates needed.

Figuring out what’s new is difficult. Sure, some people don’t care. But when I get an app update alert, I want to know what the developers have changed and what I can expect. To do this, you have to click each app individually and scroll over to where the “What’s New In This Version” section is. There should be an easy way to see the changes right from the update page.

I don’t need to be warned. If I’ve purchased the app, it’s mine and I want it. Don’t keep giving me popup alert messages about how these apps may have explicit content. I’m almost 100% positive that they don’t, but I’ve already complained about that enough.

There’s no way to organize the apps you own. Sure, it’s awesome to be able to see and configure my home screens, but what about when my iPhone isn’t connected? I want to be able to see quickly and easily which apps are on my phone and maybe sort them by apps that were recently removed from my phone or something.
Really interesting blog post by Joe Hewitt. He goes on to say that the iPhone app approval process should be removed completely comparing it to the world wide web.
